Alumni Career Talk What is Science Management Really? Let’s Find Out!

Science Management has developed into a highly popular career option for scientists in the academic mid-level faculty. Yet this relatively young profession has not established a clear professional identity so far. We will speak with two professionals in the field to learn: What is science management really?

Our guests Alice Edler and Luke Harrison have diverse experiences in the field of science management. Alice brings insights from different roles at the Ludwig Maximilians University, where she coordinated international Master programs and later on became Head of the Munich Medical Research School for many years. Alice also led the Helmholtz Munich Career Center and today she advances Digitization Processes in her role as Senior Project Manager for the Bavarian State Office for Health and Food Safety.

Luke changed into a career in science management in 2019 after completing his PhD at the Helmholtz Munich Institute for Diabetes and Obesity. He will share his experiences in his role as a science manager at the Institute for Diabetes & Cancer and acting as a Managing Editor for Molecular Metabolism, as well as managing the International Helmholtz Research School for Diabetes

Alice and Luke will give insights into

• a very diverse job field and what it looks like ‘on the job’
• strategies to transition into a job in science management
• which skills and trainings qualify for an entry position
• their own experiences in the field
